You’ve probably figured it out after 4 years but for anyone else reading this article in 2023 or beyond, I emailed them the other day and this is the word from Norco:

The fork on the Search models is intended to be used with cargo-cage style carriers, approx 5 lbs per side limit.

Your fork manufacturer will spec a weight range, but I’m skeptical as well. The solution, which I see less often than I would expect, is to go around the entire fork leg with your Voile or other straps. This way your bosses are only loaded in shear, instead of the load trying to pull them out of the fork. The side benefit is that the bag or whatever is more stable. I have used home-made cages from ABS pipe this way for thousands of miles, but recently upgraded to King cages, and will keep putting the straps around the fork legs.

The benefit of this method is even more clear when one crashes, as the twisting load on a bag can be pretty significant. At least with the straps going all the way around it’s not all bourne by the bolt bosses.

I just had a guy at a shop really try to steer me away from buying any sort of fork mount for my landyachtz ab-st, which has a fairly beefy carbon fork and has the 3 whole mounts.

Would be interested to hear any other opinions.

I had to set up rapidly two fork cages for a 1-week bikepacking travel, with Amazon being the only source option. My Ridley Kanzo A gravel bike has a fork with two eyelets only, at a non-compatible spacing. Furthermore, I had to combine them with a front rack that is already using one eyelet. I purchased a Topeak Versacage and modified one of the 3 Versamount zip tie spacers to accomodate a longer screw that would use the lower eyelet. You can remove the zip tie and keep the spacer. An M5 x 30 mm screw had the perfect size. It has proven to be very stable and have run for more than a week without any issue. Load was moderate, around 2 kg per side. Being asymmetric, different orientations of Versamount spacers on left and right side are needed; this took some time to sort out. A few (traditional) zip ties were added to avoid spacer rotation.

They were cheap ($10-$15) and can hold a 48oz Nalgene or a regular bottle (with a strap) just fine, and they don’t make you look like a mall crawler when you roll around town with your empty Anything Cages. Also, because they are more normal width cage without always needing to use a strap, they work for more daily uses, too.

Very often I run 1 or 2 easy access water bottles in bar feed bags, and store multiple liters in soft Platypus collapsible bags in the frame bag. This keeps water easy to drink, and lets you carry way more stuff in the frame bag even with a couple liters of water there too.

They are all a little different, so it might be worth reaching out to Norco for some more info. Generally a few pounds should be just fine, I’ve run 1L (2.2 pounds) of water on forks like that with no issues and I’d comfortably go up to 4 or 5 I think.

I think elsewhere on the site (there’s a gear index or article about adding attachment points to fork and frame) this topic was covered. IIRC, a suggestion was made to use zip ties over an old swatch of inner tube to keep the ties from sliding down the fork. There are also King Cage clamps that are basically hose clamps with braze-on screws that you could wrap around the fork.

It’s a bit hard to tell from the photos but with 45° rearward facing bosses on a Troll fork and 700c + 35mm tires I have about 5 cm between cage and spokes at the closest point (1st & 2nd photos). I tried mounting at 90° and it was just clipping with the cage facing forward and just clearing by 2 cm with the cage facing rearward (3rd photo). Mounting as high as possible and perhaps with the cage facing rearward might give you a bit more room but obviously depends on tire/rim/fork combo. Touch and go.

Would this work if the triple boss is directly outward 90° from the wheel? Seems like that would angle the second bottle cage so that it hits the spokes…

Sorry for the late response, they are likely using the Wolftooth Double Bottle Adapter. See more here: https://bikepacking.com/gear/wolf-tooth-b-rad/

Hey Natalie! I used the Outer Shell Pico Panniers on my Karate Monkey last summer with great success. I used them on a sus. fork and rigid fork (because they offer both mounting options) and they were great. See my thoughts above, fourth from the top!

I purchased a karate monkey and built it for trail riding and bike packing. I put a suspension fork on it for the trail riding. When I review the cages for the forks I get a bit overwhelmed and am not sure which one to get. I was considering one that could be used on the suspension fork as well as the rigid surly fork. Is this a good idea or I should I get different cages? Recommendations would be appreciated as there are so many options. Thanks in advance!😊
